In this Insider’s guide to Ikaria , you will learn everything you need to know about this Greek island known for its laid-back lifestyle, Blue Zone longevity, and family-friendly charm.

In the summer 2024, we visited Ikaria as a family for the first time. Many people told us that Ikaria has a character of its own, and I can say this is absolutely true. I liked the slower rhythm of the island, and felt that I would be better able to understand its soul if I had a local to show us around.

That’s why I asked Areti Kotsore, the kind hostess of our apartment and mum of 3, to share her insider’s tips on the island of Ikaria. If you have ever thought of visiting this Greek island, read on for more details:

Could you tell us a few words about yourself and your background? Where did you grow up & when did you relocate to Ikaria?

My name is Areti Kotsore. I was born and raised in Athens. My origins are from Ikaria, where I now permanently live, with my husband and our three children. I studied Greek Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. I used to work as a professor in Athens up until 2011, when my son was born, moving to Ikaria shortly after that. In 2017, we started our family residential renting business ‘’Stone houses Ikaria (Areti)’’, with which I have been professionally occupied ever since.

What do you like most about life in Ikaria? Is there anything at all that you would like to change?

Ikaria is an island with an abundance of natural beauty, which can offer a direct connection with nature. Being younger I never thought I’d want to live here permanently, but looking back now and comparing the quality of life in a big city such as Athens, I realize it was the best choice I have ever made in my life. My children’s daily schedule and activities are the same as those in any urban center. Although, I could say that an important problem we face, is the lack of an indoor sports hall/gymnasium, on the north side of the island. Currently the kids have no other way to practice other than in outdoor basketball courts and football fields, meaning that they have difficulties, regarding the weather conditions and as a result a lot of times, practice sessions end up being cancelled. Another two main problems that the island faces are, the insufficient ferry connection and the understaffing of our healthcare system.

According to you, which is the best period for someone to visit the island? For low season travellers, what would be the best period?

An ideal time for someone to explore the island in peace and quiet would be the springtime, the first few months of summer, as well as autumn, especially for those travelling with their families and children. During springtime you could witness the rebirth of nature and live in a different pace, as is the traditional lifestyle of the people here In Ikaria. Furthermore, in autumn there is usually little to no wind, and the ‘meltemia’ (periodic winds) have  stopped, plus the sea is really calm and warm.

Which is your favourite family-friendly itinerary on the island? How would you spend an ideal day with your kids or when someone with young kids visit you?

You  come  to  Ikaria,  because  you  want  to experience a different kind of vacation, getting away from the standard schedule of activities. A personal choice that we as a family would make is the one-day-trip to Magganitis, on the southern side of the island. We’d spend the majority of the day on the beach and later on we’d go for a meal at one of the restaurants there. In the evening we would go have an ice-cream at the traditional coffee shop, and the kids would play in the playground which is in the school yard of the old elementary school of the village. On the north side of the island, I would recommend an early morning visit to the monastery of ‘Agia Theoktisti’ located in the village Pigi, where you can enjoy the view and quiet of nature. Another place to visit is Christos in Raches with its traditional square, where you can take a stroll and afterwards go down the road, to ’Mesakti’ to enjoy the sea. If the weather allows it and there are no waves you can also rent a canoe, but if of course you happen to like waves, then this beach would be perfect for you.

Which are the island’s must-visits?

The port of Evdilos, where besides restaurants and cafes there are also traditional cobblestone paths you can wander on.

The Monastery of ‘’Theoktisti’’ and the Monastery of ‘’Mounte’’.

The village of Christos in Raches, where you can have a coffee in the morning or lunch in the afternoon or have a drink in the evening.

Magganitis is one of the most picturesque and beautiful fishing villages. The village of Xilosirti.

Are there any family-friendly activities in Ikaria? If yes, could you tell us a few?

Surf lessons in Mesakti. Swimming lessons in Gialiskari.

A summer camp for children (in July) in Raches, which includes daily outdoor activities.

Theatrical plays taking place at the theatre in Mandria and the open-air theatre in Armenistis.

 

Are there any family-friendly restaurants and cafes?

Unfortunately, there are no restaurants with playgrounds for children. In Faros the restaurants which are next to the beach.

In Agios Dimitrios the restaurant called ‘’Sto Kampi’’, where kids can play right next in the plaza of the village.

What is the best location for a family to stay in Ikaria?

If you prefer the wild nature and you like to surf, you should choose the north side of the island in Raches. If on the other hand you like some quiet time and you want to enjoy the peaceful sea then you should choose the southern side of the island in Agios Kirikos.

Other activities you would suggest considering?

Beaches worth visiting: Trapalou.

Mesakti. Faros.

In Magganitis Feroe and Seychelles beach, where I would suggest you take the boat to go to, as it departs from the little port of Magganitis every half an hour and you can also enjoy the coastal view.

Xilosirti.

Skourdouliari in Chrisostomo.

Another fun activity you can experience is the exploration of the old paths which exist all around the island, but taking always into account of course that for a family with little children there should be an experienced guide with you at all times for safety purposes.

Are there any interesting festivals & events? Any sites where one could check information about events/festivals in English and Greek?

Ikaria is famous for its festivals all across Greece, but for a family with young children, I would suggest choosing the ones starting in daytime.

Where would you go to find good food, coffee and good pastries/ice cream?

Coffee:

‘’Puerto all day bar’ in Armenistis. ‘’Sto Gialo’’ in Magganitis.

‘’Navagio’’ in Christos Raches. ‘’Aliberta’’ in Agios Polikarpos. Pastries:

‘’Ta glika tis giagias’’ (grandma’s delicacies) in Armenistis.

‘’Tsantiris’’ in Armenistis which is famous for their ice cream and also provides other shops with it as well.

‘’Zagoras’’ in Agios Kirikos.

What practical advice would you give to families visiting Ikaria with their kids?

I would suggest to book the tickets early in time as well as secure their accommodation and renting a car. Ikaria has no public transport, so a car is necessary, due to the fact that the distance to get from one place to another is quite a lot.

GREEK – ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ

Πες μας λίγα λόγια για εσένα – Πού μεγάλωσες και πότε μετακόμισες στην Ικαρία;

Ονομάζομαι Αρετή Κοτσορέ. Γεννήθηκα και μεγάλωσα στην Αθήνα. Η καταγωγή μου είναι από την Ικαρία, όπου πλέον ζω μόνιμα με τον σύζυγό μου και τα τρία μας παιδιά. Σπούδασα Ελληνική Φιλολογία στο Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Εργαζόμουν ως καθηγήτρια στην Αθήνα μέχρι το 2011, όταν γεννήθηκε ο γιος μου, και λίγο αργότερα μετακομίσαμε στην Ικαρία. Το 2017 ξεκινήσαμε την οικογενειακή μας επιχείρηση ενοικίασης κατοικιών, τις ‘’Stone houses Ikaria (Areti)’’, με την οποία ασχολούμαι επαγγελματικά έκτοτε.

Τι σου αρέσει περισσότερο στη ζωή στην Ικαρία; Υπάρχει κάτι που θα ήθελες να αλλάξεις;

Η Ικαρία είναι ένα νησί με πλούσια φυσική ομορφιά, που προσφέρει άμεση επαφή με τη φύση. Όταν ήμουν νεότερη, δεν φανταζόμουν ότι θα ήθελα να ζήσω εδώ μόνιμα, αλλά συγκρίνοντας πλέον την ποιότητα ζωής με μια μεγάλη πόλη όπως η Αθήνα, καταλαβαίνω ότι ήταν η καλύτερη επιλογή της ζωής μου. Το καθημερινό πρόγραμμα των παιδιών είναι παρόμοιο με αυτό των παιδιών στις πόλεις. Ωστόσο, ένα σημαντικό πρόβλημα είναι η έλλειψη κλειστού γυμναστηρίου στη βόρεια πλευρά του νησιού. Τα παιδιά προπονούνται μόνο σε εξωτερικά γήπεδα (μπάσκετ και ποδοσφαίρου), κάτι που δυσχεραίνει τις δραστηριότητες όταν οι καιρικές συνθήκες δεν είναι καλές. Άλλα δύο σοβαρά προβλήματα είναι η ανεπαρκής ακτοπλοϊκή σύνδεση και η ελλιπής στελέχωση του συστήματος υγείας.

Ποια είναι, κατά τη γνώμη σου, η καλύτερη περίοδος για να επισκεφθεί κανείς το νησί;

Η ιδανική περίοδος για να ανακαλύψει κάποιος το νησί με ησυχία είναι την άνοιξη, τους πρώτους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες, καθώς και το φθινόπωρο — ιδιαίτερα για οικογένειες με παιδιά. Την άνοιξη η φύση αναγεννάται και ο επισκέπτης βιώνει έναν διαφορετικό ρυθμό ζωής, όπως είναι και η παράδοση εδώ στην Ικαρία. Το φθινόπωρο συνήθως δεν φυσάει, τα μελτέμια έχουν σταματήσει και η θάλασσα είναι ήρεμη και ζεστή.

Ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σου οικογενειακό δρομολόγιο στο νησί; Πώς θα περνούσατε μια ιδανική μέρα με τα παιδιά σας ή με κάποιον που σας επισκέπτεται με μικρά παιδιά;

Στην Ικαρία έρχεσαι για να ζήσεις ένα διαφορετικό είδος διακοπών, μακριά από προγράμματα και ωράρια. Εμείς ως οικογένεια προτιμούμε μία ημερήσια εκδρομή στον Μαγγανίτη, στη νότια πλευρά του νησιού. Περνάμε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ημέρας στην παραλία και μετά πάμε για φαγητό σε κάποιο από τα ταβερνάκια. Το βράδυ απολαμβάνουμε παγωτό στο παραδοσιακό καφενείο και τα παιδιά παίζουν στην παιδική χαρά που βρίσκεται στην αυλή του παλιού δημοτικού σχολείου του χωριού. Στη βόρεια πλευρά, θα πρότεινα μια πρωινή επίσκεψη στο μοναστήρι της Αγίας Θεοκτίστης στο χωριό Πηγή, για να απολαύσετε τη θέα και την ηρεμία της φύσης. Ακόμα, αξίζει μια βόλτα στον Χριστό Ραχών και μετά μια επίσκεψη στη Μεσακτή για ν’απολαύσετε τη θάλασσα. Αν δεν έχει κύμα, μπορείτε να νοικιάσετε κανό — και αν σας αρέσουν τα κύματα, τότε είναι το ιδανικό μέρος για εσάς!

Ποια είναι τα “must” σημεία που πρέπει να επισκεφθεί κάποιος στο νησί;

• Το λιμάνι του Ευδήλου, με τα παραδοσιακά καλντερίμια, τις ταβέρνες και τα καφέ.
• Η Μονή της Θεοκτίστης και η Μονή Μουντέ.
• Ο Χριστός Ραχών με την πλατεία του, όπου μπορείς να απολαύσεις τον καφέ σου το πρωί, μεσημεριανό φαγητό ή ποτό το βραδάκι.
• Ο γραφικός Μαγγανίτης, ένα πολύ ωραίο ψαροχώρι
• Το χωριό Ξυλοσύρτης.

Υπάρχουν οικογενειακές δραστηριότητες στην Ικαρία; Αν ναι, μπορείς να μας αναφέρεις μερικές;

• Μαθήματα σερφ στη Μεσακτή.
• Μαθήματα κολύμβησης στο Γιαλισκάρι.
• Καλοκαιρινή παιδική κατασκήνωση (Ιούλιος) στις Ράχες με καθημερινές υπαίθριες δραστηριότητες.
• Θεατρικές παραστάσεις στο θέατρο Μανδριάς και στο υπαίθριο θέατρο στον Αρμενιστή.

Υπάρχουν οικογενειακά εστιατόρια και καφέ;

Δυστυχώς, δεν υπάρχουν εστιατόρια με παιδότοπους. Αλλά υπάρχουν τα εξής:

• Ταβέρνες δίπλα στη θάλασσα στον Φάρο.
• «Στο Καμπί» στον Άγιο Δημήτριο, με πλατεία δίπλα για παιχνίδι.
• Το «Φλοίσβος» στον Εύδηλο.
• Οι ταβέρνες και το παραδοσιακό καφενείο στον Μαγγανίτη.
• Το «Mary-Mary» στον Αρμενιστή.
• Οι «Ναϊάδες» στο Νας.
• Το «Αρόδου» στον Ξυλοσύρτη.
• Το «Allora» για μπέργκερ και πίτσα στο Γιαλισκάρι.
• Τα «Μπακαλιαράκια» στον Άγιο Δημήτριο.
• Το «Μαγειρικό» στον Χριστό.

Ποια είναι η καλύτερη περιοχή για οικογένειες για διαμονή στην Ικαρία;

Αν σας αρέσει η άγρια φύση και το σερφ, προτιμήστε τη βόρεια πλευρά (Ράχες). Αν προτιμάτε πιο ήρεμες διακοπές και ήσυχη θάλασσα, προτιμήστε τη νότια πλευρά, στον Άγιο Κήρυκο.

Άλλες δραστηριότητες που θα πρότεινες;

Παραλίες που αξίζουν:

• Τραπάλου.
• Μεσακτή.
• Φάρος.
• Φερόε και Σεϋχέλλες στον Μαγγανίτη — προτιμήστε να πάτε με καραβάκι από το λιμανάκι του Μαγγανίτη για να απολαύσετε τη διαδρομή.
• Ξυλοσύρτης.
• Σκουρδουλιάρι στον Χρυσόστομο.

Μια ακόμα όμορφη εμπειρία είναι η εξερεύνηση των παλιών μονοπατιών του νησιού — με την προϋπόθεση ότι υπάρχει έμπειρος οδηγός αν συνοδεύεστε από μικρά παιδιά.

Υπάρχουν ενδιαφέροντα πανηγύρια ή εκδηλώσεις; Υπάρχει κάποιο site με πληροφορίες στα ελληνικά και αγγλικά;

Η Ικαρία είναι πασίγνωστη για τα πανηγύρια της σε όλη την Ελλάδα, αλλά για οικογένειες με μικρά παιδιά θα πρότεινα εκείνα που ξεκινούν από νωρίς μέσα στη μέρα.

Πού θα βρίσκατε καλό φαγητό, καφέ και γλυκά/παγωτό;

Καφές:

• «Puerto all day bar» στον Αρμενιστή.
• «Στο Γυαλό» στον Μαγγανίτη.
• «Ναυάγιο» στον Χριστό Ραχών.
• «Αλιμπέρτα» στον Άγιο Πολύκαρπο.

Γλυκά/παγωτό:

• «Τα γλυκά της γιαγιάς» στον Αρμενιστή.
• «Τσαντηρής» στον Αρμενιστή — φημισμένος για το παγωτό του.
• «Ζαγορας» στον Άγιο Κήρυκο.

Ποιες πρακτικές συμβουλές θα δίνατε σε οικογένειες που επισκέπτονται την Ικαρία με παιδιά;

Θα πρότεινα να κλείσουν εισιτήρια και διαμονή εγκαίρως, καθώς και να ενοικιάσουν αυτοκίνητο. Δεν υπάρχει δημόσια συγκοινωνία και οι αποστάσεις είναι μεγάλες. Γι’αυτό το λόγο καλό είναι να έχετε πάντα μαζί σας ένα μικρό φαρμακείο. Μια ομπρέλα θαλάσσης είναι επίσης καλή ιδέα καθώς εκτός από τη Μεσακτή, όλες οι άλλες παραλίες δεν είναι οργανωμένες.
